"It wasn’t carefully planned," Chief McDonnell

According to the Los Angeles Police Chief, federal officers who fail to adhere to California’s new mask mandate will not be enforced by his department.

At a news conference, Chief Jim McDonnell criticized the law, stating, “It wasn’t well thought out.” He elaborated that the idea of one armed agency confronting another over what he described as a minor violation seemed pointless.

The legislation, referred to as the “Secret Police Prohibition Act,” mandates identification and treats violations as misdemeanors. Signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the law took effect on January 1st, but it has faced opposition from the Trump administration, which claims it disrupts federal operations.

The Justice Department has also expressed concerns, labeling the act unconstitutional and suggesting it could lead to harassment of agents.

There are exceptions to the law, including masks for undercover operations, medical reasons, or protective equipment like tactical helmets.

Over the weekend, tensions escalated when a masked group clashed with federal agents outside the Metropolitan Detention Center, with demonstrators throwing various items at law enforcement.

McDonnell mentioned that he and federal partners share concerns, stating, “We’re aligned on everything except immigration enforcement,” noting frustrations with the situation in Los Angeles and nationwide since June.
