Trump's drug chief warns of a dangerous 'rhino tranquilizer' claiming American lives as cartel conflict intensifies

Warning About New Drugs in America

The Trump administration has issued a serious warning regarding the rise of dangerous new drugs in America.

Sarah Carter, known as the “Drug Czar,” discussed the sedative medetomidine, sometimes referred to as the “rhino tranquilizer,” during an appearance on “Hannity.” “This is the first time we’ve collaborated with the CDC to issue an alert,” she mentioned to Sean Hannity.

A federal advisory indicates medetomidine is frequently being mixed with illegal fentanyl, which Carter noted is tragically “killing people.” The frequency of drug seizures has reportedly risen since 2023, particularly in the Northeast and Midwest.

“Medetomidine poses a serious risk to our communities and reinforces that the only truly safe level of illicit drug use is none,” said Carter, who heads the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in a White House alert.

She highlighted that this alert is part of the administration’s strategy to support law enforcement efforts against smuggling operations. By using tools like nationwide wastewater testing, they are reportedly able to detect drug surges more swiftly.

“We’re going to stay one step ahead of those trying to harm us. We refuse to endorse policies that favor drug cartels,” Carter asserted, emphasizing their proactive stance.

Carter also touched on President Trump’s approach, which aims to target drug cartels directly. “He truly means what he says,” she remarked, reflecting on her interactions with leaders in Central America and Mexico.

Major efforts like removing former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and working with Mexico to dismantle cartel leader El Mencho illustrate the U.S.’s commitment to safeguarding the Western Hemisphere from drug-related violence.

“This is President Trump’s pledge to the American people. We will not back down,” she reiterated.

“We plan not only to cut off their leadership but also to cripple their financial resources—we’ll strike at their core, making it difficult for them to operate,” she added.

The administration’s crackdown follows its December 2025 decision to classify fentanyl and its precursor chemicals as weapons of mass destruction. This designation allows the U.S. to employ intelligence and military tactics to combat illegal drugs more effectively.
