Goalie brawl occurs during Lightning-Bruins game in Stadium Series

Tampa Bay Lightning Surprises Bruins in Thrilling Stadium Series Match

February kicked off with an intense showdown between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins as part of the Stadium Series, hosted at the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

During the second period, with the Lightning ahead by three goals, both teams found themselves tangled in a heated exchange. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman decided to throw down with Lightning standout Andrei Vasilevskiy, leading to a brief but intense fight.

Vasilevskiy landed several punches before Swayman took a knee, prompting the referee to step in and end the scuffle. Interestingly, this brawl seemed to ignite a fire under the Lightning, who came back to ultimately win the game 6-5 despite being down 5-2 at the time of the fight.

“He was throwing left,” reflected Nikita Kucherov of Tampa Bay. “I thought, ‘Oh my god.’ I didn’t want to be the other guy,” he said, visibly energized by the events. “I think everyone felt it. The game changed from that point on. Vasey had to wake us up.”

Teammate Brandon Hagel echoed this sentiment, calling it a crucial turning point in the contest. Kucherov even cheekily dubbed Vasilevskiy ‘White Tyson’ after the fight.

This event marked the first goaltender battle ever recorded in outdoor game history, entertaining an impressive crowd of 64,617 at Raymond James Stadium. Kucherov managed to tie the game later in the third period.

Eventually, the Lightning triumphed in the shootout with contributions from Kucherov, Gage Goncalves, and Jake Guentzel.

Tampa Bay’s comeback stands as the largest upset in franchise history, as well as the biggest in NHL outdoor game history, elevating their season record to 35-14-4, while the Bruins fell to 32-20-4.
