As talks between the U.S. and Iran progress, reports indicate that Iran is increasing its violent repression domestically while also becoming more vocal in regional matters, as noted by various analysts and witnesses.
On Sunday and Monday, Iran issued fresh warnings that military strikes on its territory might lead to broader regional conflict, even though some senior officials expressed openness to negotiations. Reuters mentioned that Iran might consider resuming nuclear discussions with the U.S., potentially with Turkey facilitating talks while countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar engage as mediators. This comes on the heels of President Trump expressing hope for a deal that could avert military action against Iran.
According to Axios, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff is expected in Israel on Tuesday for discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. These talks will likely center on Iran, especially following Zamir’s recent meetings with U.S. defense leaders.
Benny Sabti, an Iran expert from the Israel National Security Institute, characterized Iran’s behavior as consistent with its historical strategy. He noted that Iran has increased its threats recently, cautioning that a military attack could endanger the entire region. “They’re acting like they’re being held hostage,” he remarked, suggesting that this approach has been effective.
Sabti highlighted the variety of mediators seeking dialogue, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, all of whom have approached the U.S. to foster discussions as a way to sidestep the Iranian threat.
While there are calls for diplomacy, there seems to be confusion emanating from Iran itself, as different factions send mixed signals. Sabti pointed out that military voices within the Revolutionary Guards and other sectors are escalating threats, contrasting with diplomatic overtures from the foreign minister and president.
Some local reports suggested that Iranian news agencies had removed announcements about negotiation approvals with the U.S. Furthermore, mixed messaging reflects a strategy to keep adversaries uncertain while maintaining pressure across the region.
Internally, the situation remains dire, with reports indicating intensified crackdowns on protesters. Casualty estimates vary significantly. The Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) noted that by the end of the 36th day of protests, 6,842 deaths were confirmed, 6,425 of whom were classified as protesters, including 146 children. Some reports even foresee potential total casualties reaching 30,000.
Witness accounts from within Iran describe shocking incidents. In one area, a witness recounted that 27 protestors were shot, with ten fatalities. In northern Iran, fifteen casualties occurred during protests outside a government office. Disturbingly, there have also been claims of security forces removing injured protestors from hospitals.
Sabti observed that this renewed diplomatic engagement has fostered growing disillusionment among Iranians. Many had high hopes when President Trump made supportive comments about the Iranian people but now feel let down, interpreting such remarks as more aligned with the regime than with their fight for rights.
