'Melania' Has Surpassed Five 2025 Oscar Nominees in Box Office Earnings

Box Office Performance of “Melania” Exceeds Academy Award Nominees

In just a week, Melania has grossed around $7 million over the three-day weekend, surpassing the combined total of five domestic films nominated for this year’s Academy Awards, including two Best Picture nominees.

  • Secret agent: $3.25 million — Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Foreign Film.
  • Sentimental value: $4.57 million — Eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
  • If I had legs I’d kick you: $1.09 million — Best Actress nominee.
  • blue moon: $2.11 million — Nominated for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.
  • it was just an accident: $1.78 million — Nominations for Original Screenplay and Foreign Film.

Some people might point out that several of these films are foreign productions, while Melania explores themes of immigration. It’s worth noting that numerous foreign films have also earned over $7 million.

Critics might highlight the limited releases of these titles, echoing a common marketing strategy aimed at building hype through word-of-mouth to encourage wider releases and boost box office earnings. Still, the limited release often suggests a strategic failure.

That said, crucial differences emerge when you consider the media coverage. All five nominated films received significant praise and extensive free publicity from the entertainment industry, boosted by their Oscar nominations. I’m not suggesting they don’t deserve that recognition; I just haven’t watched them, and I suspect many others haven’t either.

One key distinction: all five are feature films, whereas Melania is a documentary.

None of the nominated films could withstand negative press. Unlike Melania, which faced weeks of criticism from various media outlets, it still managed to stand out as one of the best documentaries of the decade.

Remarkably, Melania thrived, even with the knowledge that it would soon be available on Amazon Prime.

In just one weekend, Melania also exceeded the domestic box office revenues of recent films featuring Jennifer Lawrence and adaptations of Stephen King’s works.
