85 Seconds to Midnight: A Wake-Up Call
We’re now just 85 seconds from midnight, an alarming marker that suggests we’re closer to catastrophe than ever before.
This stark warning comes from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
The Doomsday Clock, established in 1947, symbolizes the existential threat posed by human actions. So, what drives this grim assessment? It appears that hard-earned global consensus is deteriorating. Competition among major powers is intensifying, and vital international cooperation necessary to manage the risks of nuclear conflict, climate change, misuse of biotechnology, and looming dangers related to artificial intelligence is waning.
Many leaders seem to have grown indifferent, adopting attitudes and policies that exacerbate, rather than alleviate, these critical threats. In light of this leadership failure, the Bulletin has set the Doomsday Clock at 85 seconds to midnight—the closest we’ve ever been to a potential disaster.
Are we in the so-called end times?
My immediate inclination is to say, “Yes.” Technically, the end times actually began with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
When He ascended to heaven, it marked the commencement of the end times—essentially the culmination of God’s narrative since creation and humanity’s descent into sin.
From establishing Israel to leading His people to the Promised Land,
…God sent judges, kings, and prophets, all pointing to Jesus;
…And through it all, God has been inviting people to Himself, notably through Jesus’s intervention.
Thus, the end times have persisted ever since.
The pressing question is: how close are we to the actual conclusion? There remains only a series of events yet to unfold, those end-time occurrences. All that transpires between Jesus and now constitutes the end time.
So, what does the “end of the world” event entail? Jesus spoke about it quite plainly, which is why the relevant passage in Matthew is often referred to as the “Little Revelation.” He cautioned us:
Many will come claiming to be the Messiah, leading others astray. While you’ll hear of wars and threats, try not to panic. These events must occur, but they won’t be the end immediately. Nations will rise against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes worldwide. These are just the early signs, the initial surges of what’s to come.
If you stand firm in your faith, you may face persecution. Many will turn away from their beliefs. False prophets will emerge, leading many into deception. Sin will proliferate, and love will fade. However, the good news of the kingdom will be shared globally, and then the end will arrive. (Matthew 24:5-12)
Assessing this text, we can identify at least eight signs Jesus described.
1. False prophets will arise. Individuals will claim to be Christ or some savior-like figure, misleading people away from truth.
2. Wars and conflict will abound. A climate of anxiety concerning global unrest will prevail.
3. Natural disasters will increase. Expect a rise in extreme weather events like floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
4. Christians will face persecution. Followers of Christ may be targeted and marginalized.
5. Many will abandon their faith. A significant number of individuals may turn their backs on Jesus.
6. Internal strife among Christians. Divisions and discord will emerge within the faith community.
7. Immorality will proliferate. Actions that offend God will become commonplace, often unnoticed.
8. The good news of Jesus will reach everyone. Before everything concludes, the message will be shared globally.
So, are we in the end times?
Do these eight signs hold any validity?
Consider current events:
…The online sphere is flooded with false teachings.
…The threat of World War III looms amidst the conflict in Ukraine and Israel.
…Erratic climate conditions are rising due to global warming.
…Persecution of Christians persists, particularly in nations like China and India.
…A former self-identified Christian is gaining traction among a growing number of disenchanted individuals.
…The Christian community is increasingly divided along ideological lines, moving away from shared theological beliefs.
…The conversation has shifted from same-sex marriage to a broader acceptance of various identity issues, including troubling aspects of consent.
…For the first time, the Internet enables the global dissemination of any message, including the message of Jesus.
In my view, these indicators align with all eight signs.
Ultimately, we can’t pinpoint the exact timing but we can grasp what the world might look like as the end approaches. While I’m not one for alarmism, I think there’s wisdom in C.S. Lewis’s idea of living each day as if it’s our last.
And it’s hard not to observe that things don’t feel right in the world right now.
That likely means there are perhaps 84 seconds left until midnight—or even less.
