Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) expressed that his confidence in the Trump administration has been significantly shaken, particularly after their reaction to the shooting incident involving Alex Preti, who was killed by a Border Patrol agent in Minnesota.
During an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Paul voiced his unease regarding statements made by officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol Commissioner Greg Bovino. He noted their claims that Preti engaged in domestic terrorism or aimed for “maximum damage,” especially after a video of the incident emerged online.
Paul reflected on their comments, stating, “It sounds like terrible judgment.” He elaborated that these statements suggest “terrible conclusions, false conclusions, things that no one believes.” He emphasized that without the video evidence, it’s easier for officials to misrepresent the situation. “But the video doesn’t support what they’re saying,” he added.
Correspondent Scott Pelley remarked on the apparent loss of trust, to which Paul agreed: “There’s no question about it.” He further questioned the reliability of the FBI in investigating the shooting, suggesting it might be more appropriate for an independent group outside the federal government to handle the case.
Paul later commented on the protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), emphasizing that while he doesn’t condone aggressive actions like spitting on police, he recognizes the right to protest. “If you were my son or daughter, would you tell them to spit on the police? Absolutely not. Would you tell them to yell and scream? No. But is it illegal to protest? No,” he said.
In the wake of the shooting and ongoing protests, Paul criticized the federal response, pointing to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s lack of cooperation with federal authorities as a significant issue.
The White House directed media inquiries to President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding the investigation into the shooting. Trump stated, “We’re conducting a massive investigation. I want to see it. I’m going to watch it. I want a very honorable and honest investigation. I have to investigate it myself.”
Paul also called for the leaders of ICE, Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to testify before his committee later this month.
