The British Prime Minister has urged Peter Mandelson to step down from Parliament and forfeit his title following recent emails linked to Epstein, which further highlight the former British ambassador’s potentially illegal actions.
Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, has indicated that the individual he appointed to a prominent government role should now be removed from the House of Lords.
According to the Prime Minister’s spokesperson, while the Government has its responsibilities, the belief is that these positions should be filled by others. Following some political embarrassment, there have been discussions on how to handle the departure of Mandelson, who has been a close ally to Starmer.
Amid this, Downing Street stated that the Prime Minister has urgently called for an investigation into Mandelson’s communication with Epstein during his previous roles in the Blair and Brown administrations.
Mandelson, who has a storied background in British politics, was selected for his current role despite past controversies. He had openly criticized former US President Donald Trump, labeling him as a significant danger, yet upon arriving in Washington in late 2024, Mandelson appeared to pivot towards building rapport with Trump.
Known in the UK as the “Prince of Darkness” for his media and political skills, Mandelson faced renewed scrutiny over the weekend when new emails from Epstein were released. Allegations included him forwarding classified briefings to Epstein and assisting Epstein’s associates in lobbying efforts, along with receiving considerable sums from Epstein.
The released emails suggest Mandelson maintained contact with Epstein even after Epstein’s conviction for sex crimes and was apprehensive about discussing it publicly. Initially, he dismissed the emerging story as an obsession of the press, urging everyone to move on.
Later, Mandelson expressed regret over their connection, claiming ignorance of any misconduct on Epstein’s part.
The documents that surfaced this weekend also included private photos of Mandelson. According to a spokesperson, he attempted to minimize the revelations, despite the significant amount of information now available. He stated that no one could definitively say who took the photos or their context, emphasizing his lack of knowledge regarding any ties to Epstein.
However, reports fromSky News later suggested that there’s geolocation evidence connecting the photos to Epstein’s Paris home, indicating distinctive decorative features visible in the images.
As reported by the Daily Telegraph, if it is confirmed that Mandelson shared confidential government information with Epstein while serving as a minister, it could have legal implications. This purportedly occurred during Gordon Brown’s term, who has since requested an investigation into the allegations.
