2026 NFL free agency player list: Top available running backs

With the Super Bowl on the horizon, NFL teams are gearing up for the 2026 free agency period. They’re strategizing about their current players while keeping tabs on available free agents for the upcoming offseason. Here, we’ll examine the projected running back free agents for 2026 and try to estimate how teams might rank them.

At first glance, this group appears quite strong. However, like all free agent forecasts, much depends on how many players decide to stay with their current teams. There’s a mix of lead backs, some high-caliber talent, and promising prospects. Let’s take a closer look at the top running backs set to hit free agency in 2026.

1.) Breece Hall, New York Jets

2025 Stats: 16 games, 1065 yards on 243 attempts (4.4 YPC), 4 rushing TDs, 350 yards on 36 receptions (9.7 YPR), 1 receiving TD, 2 fumbles.

Breece Hall has long been discussed as a potential breakout star. Now, with the possibility of escaping the Jets’ struggling offense, he could have a significant impact. As a dual threat on the ground and in the passing game, he possesses the potential to be the centerpiece of an offense. It’ll be interesting to see how teams value him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he commands the highest contract among free-agent running backs.

2.) Javonte Williams, Dallas Cowboys

2025 Stats: 16 games, 252 attempts for 1,201 yards (4.8 YPC), 11 rushing TDs, 35 receptions for 137 yards (3.9 YPR), 2 receiving TDs, 2 fumbles.

A personal favorite from the 2021 draft, Javonte Williams started strong with the Broncos until injuries hindered his progress. After a rough patch during his rookie contract, he secured a fresh start with the Cowboys last offseason. Since then, he has made a remarkable comeback, becoming one of the standout success stories of free agency in 2025. At just 26, he has the potential to earn a significant payday.

3.) Travis Etienne, Jacksonville Jaguars

2025 Stats: 17 games, 1107 yards on 260 attempts (4.3 YPC), 7 rushing TDs, 36 receptions for 292 yards (8.1 YPR), 6 receiving TDs, 1 fumble.

Travis Etienne has had a bit of an uneven run as a starting back with the Jaguars. However, his performance rose in 2025, showing he could be a reliable option. It’ll be interesting to see if the Jaguars see value in re-signing him or if he’ll be sent to the open market.

4.) Rico Doodle, Carolina Panthers

2025 Stats: 17 games, 236 attempts, 1076 yards (4.6 YPC), 6 rushing TDs, 39 receptions, 297 yards (7.6 YPR), 1 receiving TD, 2 fumbles.

Another player who found success post-rookie year, Rico Doodle had his breakout season in 2024 but was unexpectedly let go by the Cowboys as they opted for Javonte Williams. He joined the Panthers, but his performance was inconsistent throughout the season. After an impressive game against the Dolphins, it’s uncertain how NFL teams will view him after a lackluster 2025.

5.) Kenneth Walker III, Seattle Seahawks

2025 Stats: 17 games, 1027 yards on 221 attempts (4.6 YPC), 5 rushing TDs, 31 receptions for 282 yards (9.1 YPR), 1 fumble.

Kenneth Walker is set to fully contribute in his first complete season, especially following Zach Charbonnet’s injury. He’s proven to be an explosive yet inconsistent runner. While he may not be a traditional workhorse, his ability for big plays makes him a valuable asset for any team.

6.) Tyler Allgaier, Atlanta Falcons

2025 Stats: 17 games, 514 yards on 143 attempts (3.6 YPC), 8 rushing TDs, 96 yards on 14 receptions (6.9 YPR)

Serving as a backup to Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgaier hasn’t had much opportunity to return to his rookie season form. However, he’s transitioned into a role that focuses on short-yardage situations, scoring eight touchdowns but sacrificing some efficiency. Notably, he hasn’t fumbled in his four seasons, showcasing reliability.

7.) Rashard White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2025 Stats: 17 games, 572 yards on 132 attempts (4.3 YPC), 4 rushing TDs, 218 yards on 40 receptions (5.5 YPR)

Rashard White represents the next tier of this running back class. Though he’s been a consistent player for the Buccaneers, he hasn’t quite seized the opportunity to elevate his game. Despite being capable as both a runner and receiver, he lacks the dynamism needed to be a starting back. His fumbles have significantly decreased this past year, a positive shift.

8.) JK Dobbins, Denver Broncos

2025 Stats: 10 games, 772 yards on 153 attempts (5.0 YPC), 4 rushing TDs, 37 yards on 11 receptions (3.4 YPR)

It’s unfortunate that JK Dobbins’ career has been marred by injuries. When he’s healthy, his running ability shines. He was having a strong season in 2025 until another injury limited his contributions. While he may not be dependable for a full season, he can make a mark when fit.

9.) Kenneth Gainwell, Pittsburgh Steelers

2025 Stats: 17 games, 114 attempts, 537 yards (4.7 YPC), 5 rushing TDs, 73 receptions, 486 yards (6.7 YPR), 3 receiving TDs, 2 fumbles.

Kenneth Gainwell had a breakout performance in 2025 with the Steelers, taking the lead in the backfield and contributing significantly in the passing game. While he remains an inconsistent runner at times, he’s one of the more established committee backs available in free agency this year.

10.) Isaiah Pacheco, Kansas City Chiefs

2025 Stats: 13 games, 118 attempts for 462 yards (3.9 YPC), 1 rushing TD, 19 receptions for 101 yards (5.3 YPR), 1 receiving TD

Isaiah Pacheco has faced some setbacks due to injuries, which has likely affected his development after a promising start to his career. While he remains a capable player, his inconsistency and injury history could hinder his positioning in free agency.
