Jonathan Roomy, noted for his role as Jesus in the popular series The Chosen One, is set to star in a new film this weekend that he believes redefines romantic comedy in a fresh way.
His upcoming project, Solomio (PG), directed by Angel Studios, follows an American man who finds himself abandoned at an altar in Rome. He then decides to embark on his honeymoon alone, exploring Italy. Kevin James leads the cast, while Roomy plays Neil, a new acquaintance that James’ character meets during his journey.
Interestingly, casual viewers might overlook Roomy in this film. His clean-shaven look differs from the iconic beard he sports in The Chosen One. The movie is scheduled for release on February 6th.
Roomy describes Solomio as something that “elevates the genre in unexpected ways.” He mentioned in an interview with Crosswalk Headlines, “It strikes a chord below the surface. There are some significant plot twists you wouldn’t typically find in romantic comedies.”
For parents, the film offers emotional depth while remaining suitable for family viewing. He remarked, “There isn’t anything problematic about it. My nieces found it hilarious.” He feels that such movies are a rarity nowadays.
This isn’t Roomy’s first venture outside of his role in The Chosen One. He also starred in the 2023 film Jesus Revolution and has produced several faith-based projects, including The Servant’s Heart: The Story of Father Flanagan and Twenty One.
Widely recognized for The Chosen One, which many credit for a resurgence in faith-driven storytelling, it has received accolades from various critics for its rich character development over multiple seasons.
Roomy expressed a desire to continue producing works that uphold standards while being anchored in faith. “I’m passionate about telling stories that honor God and shed light on cultural issues,” he stated. “As a storyteller, an actor, and a producer, it’s my mission to illuminate.”
He is particularly drawn to narratives featuring flawed characters who ultimately seek redemption, portraying someone quite unlike his role as Jesus. “They can have their imperfections and struggles. It’s about how those journeys evolve and lead to a brighter outcome. These are the stories that resonate with me,” he shared. “I feel compelled to tell those and share them with an audience.”
He finds exploring different genres creatively rewarding. “Before my role in The Chosen One, I often took on comedic guest spots in various shows. Solomio was a refreshing change where I didn’t feel the pressure to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders. Neil has his imperfections but possesses a lovely heart,” Roomy noted.
Solomio is rated PG due to some suggestive content, brief profanity, violence, and smoking.
