Victor Davis Hanson, a notable author and conservative commentator, recently shared details about his health following lung cancer surgery. He had announced in December that he would undergo significant medical procedures after a biopsy revealed concerning results. Although the initial surgery went well, complications arose due to arterial bleeding, necessitating a second operation and extending his recovery period.

In a post, he mentioned, “Over the past 30 days, I’ve faced low red blood cell counts, fatigue, and episodes of arterial fibrillation, all of which have slowed my recovery.” He has been open about the challenges he’s been enduring.

Recovery Journey

Hanson’s lung cancer is characterized by a unique genetic mutation that reportedly carries about a 40% chance of recurrence, which complicates treatment options like chemotherapy and immunotherapy. He mentioned that while these treatments offer minimal advantages—around 5% to 10% in preventing recurrence—he plans to weigh the options for further treatment after some recovery.

As for when he might feel closer to normal again, Hanson expressed uncertainty but maintains hope for a swift return to his usual routine. “I aim to get back as soon as possible, but I’m not certain when that will be. I may post occasionally on days when I’m feeling a bit better,” he shared.
