"Everyone belongs on taken land": Grammys crowd reacts enthusiastically to anti-ICE remarks

2026 Grammy Awards

The 2026 Grammy Awards sometimes felt more like a political demonstration, with audience members passionately voicing their dissatisfaction with the government.

Several award winners took a direct shot at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during their speeches, prompting enthusiastic standing ovations.

“Well, damn ICE, that’s all I’m trying to say. Sorry,” one winner remarked, which sent the crowd into a frenzy.

When Billie Eilish won Song of the Year, she declared, “No one is an illegal alien on stolen land.” This comment left the audience in silence, only to erupt in applause and standing ovations moments later.

ICE-capades

The 24-year-old Eilish expressed uncertainty but also optimism, saying, “It’s really tough to know what to say and do right now. I feel really hopeful in this room. We need to keep fighting, speaking out, and protesting. Our voices truly matter.” She reiterates, “Well, all I want to say is ICE. I’m sorry,” and the audience erupted again.

Fans reacted wildly when Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny won Best Urban Album. He started his speech with “ICE out,” receiving applause immediately. “We are not savages. We are not animals. We are not aliens. We are human beings. And we are Americans,” he asserted, which seems odd considering ICE’s role in immigration enforcement.

However, his plea for love in their fight—”Please do something different. If we’re going to fight, we have to do it with love”—did not generate the same level of excitement.

He continued, “We don’t hate them. We love our people. We love our families. And that’s how you do it with love. Please don’t forget that, please.”

Pop Star Critique

Eilish attended the ceremony wearing an “ICE Out” pin, joined by her peers Justin Vernon and Jack Antonoff. Interestingly, Justin and Hailey Bieber seemed to draw attention for less favorable reasons as they made their red carpet appearance.

When Jelly Roll was questioned about his silence on political issues, he candidly replied, “People don’t need to hear my opinion. Come on, I’m a stupid redneck. I haven’t had a cell phone for 18 months. I’ve had one for just four months now, and I don’t even use social media.” Yet, he promised that he would have a lot to say soon, urging audiences to listen closely.

Shut Up and Sing

Comedian Ricky Gervais weighed in the following morning, poking fun at celebrities giving political speeches, stating, “They still haven’t listened.” He referenced his previous Golden Globe remarks: “If you win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform for a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public on anything. You don’t know anything about the real world.”
