Seahawks Coach Tired of Super Bowl 2015 Jokes

It’s safe to say everyone has a joke about Super Bowl 2015, but Seahawks coach Mike McDonald is ready for the conversation to move on.

On Monday, he faced the media, fielding various questions about the upcoming Super Bowl rematch 11 years later. When probed about his strategy regarding whether to pass or run the ball with 30 seconds remaining and a four-point lead, he brushed it off.

This, of course, was a nod to the infamous moment in Super Bowl 49 when Malcolm Butler’s interception secured a win for the Patriots.

McDonald responded, “I can play my best.”

He then cheekily asked, “Is Beast Mode (Marshawn Lynch) in the backfield?”

By the end of the press conference, McDonald had made his position clear: he was tired of discussing that particular play call made by Pete Carroll during a crucial moment when running the ball might have been a better choice.

“I’m done answering that question,” he insisted.

The play remains notorious because it came as the Seahawks sought to repeat their championship success from the previous season.

With a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line, Lynch ran just four yards, nearly scoring. There was chaos, and the clock was ticking down.

Seattle didn’t get a second down until there were only 26 seconds left, but the decision to attempt a pass to Ricardo Lockett—essentially a fourth-string receiver—was seen as baffling by many.

Butler’s interception not only led to a major shift in that game but also shook up the Seahawks’ coaching staff—a trend that’s been evident for over a decade. Fans around the league reacted with widespread outrage.

Setting aside media inquiries, the Seahawks are looking for some kind of retribution this Sunday, as that Super Bowl essentially marked the end of their championship cycle with Carroll and Wilson.

As they head into the game, Seattle is a 4.5-point favorite.
