Kamala Harris Calls for “Guardrails” Against Trump in Upcoming Elections
Former Vice President Kamala Harris urged voters on Monday to establish “guardrails” for President Donald Trump in the forthcoming midterm elections, expressing concern over diminishing public trust in government during her book tour.
Speaking at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, Harris criticized the Trump administration for its focus on “disruption.” She spent about an hour delving into various topics, including immigration and the rising costs of living.
When asked about her emotional state, Harris admitted to feeling “sadness, regret, and anger.”
She emphasized the critical nature of the November elections, pointing to widespread public anxiety about health care and food prices. This moment, she suggested, represents a chance to impose some “guardrails” on the White House.
The discussion shifted to immigration enforcement in Minnesota, particularly regarding the actions of federal agents following the shootings of two individuals in January. Harris stressed the need for a stronger stance on immigration, stating, “We need a crackdown on immigration, but that’s not what we’re seeing.”
Harris also criticized the administration’s initial handling of the aftermath of the shootings, where a government official described one of the deceased as a “domestic terrorist.” The rhetoric, she remarked, overlooked the realities witnessed in the situation.
The tragic incident ignited protests nationwide, with demonstrators demanding the withdrawal of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from their communities. The Justice Department has since opened a federal civil rights investigation into the matter.
