Car thief makes a wet getaway into the ocean after a police chase in Southern California

Things didn’t quite go according to plan for a car thief in Huntington Beach.

This particular thief, a decent swimmer, tried to escape the police by leaping into the water. Unfortunately for him, the plan fell apart – there wasn’t much room to swim.

The whole scene played out on video one Sunday night. The thief had stolen a car and took off down the Pacific Coast Highway after police attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation, as reported.

In the footage, police deployed spike strips to take out the tires of the stolen vehicle and then forcibly stopped the car. But the chase didn’t end there. As described in a cheeky social media post, both the “soggy suspect” and his passenger bolted from the car, trying to run away on foot.

“Both suspects have been released on bail,” the police noted. While the passenger was quickly apprehended, it seems the driver forgot that the beach closed at 10 PM, making a beeline for the water instead.

In the video, the thief is shown sitting in the surf, surrounded by authorities. With no escape left, he eventually surrendered.

The clip of this unusual escape attempt quickly went viral on social media, with police humorously criticizing the failed getaway.

They pointed out, “When the beaches are closed… they really are closed,” warning that the beach is definitely not a good escape route after hours.

Currently, both individuals are facing several charges, though their names have not been disclosed.
