Roland Martin criticizes White progressives for their comments on Crockett's Senate campaign

Liberal commentator and podcaster Roland Martin recently expressed his thoughts on the criticism directed at Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and her Senate campaign from certain white progressives. He suggested they should “shut up and wait.”

During a recent episode of “At Our Table with Jamie Harrison,” Harrison asked Martin who deserves the show’s “Sit Your A Down” award for the week. This award recognizes those who might be out of line and need a reality check.

Martin responded by saying that those who are criticizing Crockett’s campaign are the same ones who have little knowledge of her competitor, Talarico. He pointed out the hypocrisy of their critiques.

He mentioned that while he appreciates Talarico and resides in Crockett’s district, he’s concerned about how some people promote Talarico while disparaging Crockett without acknowledging any prior mention of him until she announced her candidacy.

“I’m exhausted by white progressives who don’t even live in Texas,” Martin said, adding that they often have no comprehension of Texas politics. Still, they act as if they’re experts. “They really should just sit down,” he concluded with noticeable frustration.

Harrison echoed Martin’s sentiments, urging skeptical white progressives about Crockett’s chances to take a step back.

Martin also criticized individuals who undermine Crockett’s potential by saying she can’t win. “I can’t even name one of her policies that they talk about,” he noted. He added that there’s often a lack of understanding and awareness surrounding voter demographics in Texas.

He pointed out that despite a significant number of minority voters, polling suggests support for Crockett could be competitive, particularly given Texas’s diverse population. However, he also highlighted that a majority of Texas voters are white, complicating matters further.

“The misconception is that Texas is just a strongly Republican state,” he elaborated. “Many young voters didn’t turn out in past elections. The state does have a substantial number of Black voters, so the question is really about turnout.”

Reflecting on the racial diversity of past Texas Senate candidates, Martin indicated that those who overlook this diversity are unjustly marginalizing Crockett’s campaign and spreading skepticism without proper understanding of Texas’s demographics.

In his conclusion, he emphasized that those doubtful of Crockett’s prospects often showcase a lack of awareness regarding key demographics and voter behavior across the state, pointing out that many couldn’t even accurately comment on specific counties or local political dynamics. “They really need to reassess their insights,” he suggested.
