'Today' host Savannah Guthrie's 84-year-old mother disappears from home after not attending church; police alert: 'We have a crime scene'

Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Raises Concerns

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, has vanished under puzzling circumstances, leading police to suspect potential abduction from her home in Arizona.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department shared this alarming news. Nancy was last seen Saturday evening at her residence located in the Catalina Foothills, which is just north of Tucson.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos disclosed at a press conference on Monday that her absence was first noted on Sunday morning when a church friend realized Nancy was missing and promptly informed one of her children.

“The family checked the house first,” Nanos remarked. “I believe they looked around before they called us.” Despite their efforts, they couldn’t locate her, prompting investigators to consider the involvement of foul play.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed that all of Nancy’s belongings, including her wallet and cellphone, were found in the house, but she was nowhere to be discovered. Investigators expressed concerns after examining the scene.

“We noticed some things inside that raised alarm,” Sheriff Nanos stated, noting that the area was treated as a crime scene. “We really believe a crime did take place, and we’re asking the community for assistance.”

Details emerged that indicated suspicious circumstances surrounding her disappearance. “We have what appears to be biological evidence, which we are submitting for analysis,” Nanos added, indicating the presence of blood stains at Nancy’s home. However, officials mentioned that they have not disclosed whose blood was found.

“Currently, we’re treating this as a potential kidnapping,” Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Kevin Adger informed the media.

Sheriff Nanos suggested, “I do believe she was taken against her will. She didn’t just leave on her own.” At this point, they are attempting to ascertain whether Nancy was a target, although there are no clear early indicators of why she might be.

Nanos asked residents nearby to check their security cameras from the past weekend for any unusual activity, as it could prove relevant to the case. “If anyone saw anything—any vehicles or pedestrians roaming around—please let us know,” he urged.

Search efforts include the use of drones and helicopters, alongside thermal sensors, in hopes of locating Nancy. Additionally, the FBI is assisting local authorities in the ongoing inquiry.

The sheriff explained that Nancy is in frail health, which increases concerns for her safety. He emphasized, “We know she didn’t leave voluntarily.” Her family reported that she exhibits no cognitive impairments, indicating she is fully aware and alert.

“This isn’t due to dementia. She is quite sharp,” Nanos reassured, adding that she has various health issues and requires medication that could pose a serious risk if left unattended.

The sheriff described Nancy’s physical attributes, noting she stands at five feet five inches tall, has brown hair, blue eyes, and weighs approximately 150 pounds.

While the investigation unfolds, Savannah was notably absent from the Today show as efforts to find her mother continued. She expressed gratitude for the community’s support and urged anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department directly.

Nancy’s family is hoping for her safe return. “Belief and prayer are vital for us,” Savannah shared, urging collective prayer for her mother’s well-being.

Law enforcement is emphasizing that every detail is crucial in this investigation. A $2,500 reward is being offered for information that leads to discovering Nancy’s whereabouts or the apprehension of those involved in her disappearance.

Authorities remain hopeful as they continue their search and investigation, urging anyone who might hold relevant information to step forward.
