Mayor Under Fire for Fashion Choices Amid Winter Crisis
Mayor Zoran Mamdani is facing criticism, with accusations that he’s prioritizing his wardrobe over addressing the dire consequences of winter storm Fern, which recently resulted in 16 fatalities in New York City.
Many were outraged by his choice to don a custom Carhartt jacket during a heavy snowfall while he was seen shoveling snow in Brooklyn on January 25. With so much happening, it seemed inappropriate, to say the least.
One user expressed frustration, stating, “I didn’t expect that under Mamdani’s leadership, we would see over a dozen people perish, while roads remained blocked with snow and trash was taking over. But hey, at least he has a custom jacket for his promotional videos.” It’s a sentiment that resonates with many.
In a related news conference, he revealed that the death toll had grown to 16, which included 13 individuals who froze and three others who succumbed to overdoses, as garbage continued to pile up on unplowed streets.
The New York Times, in its “Style” section, emphasized Mamdani’s “modest and understated” winter coat, which quickly sparked conversations on social media. The article noted that he picked the jacket out prior to the storm, guided by his wife, Rama Duwaj.
According to senior adviser Noah Neary, “The first lady is his most trusted advisor, providing creative input,” and they were pleased with the outcome.
The jacket, purchased at a store in Manhattan and embroidered in Brooklyn, features the phrase, “No problem is too big. No challenge too small,” a nod to Mamdani’s campaign speeches. However, this attention to detail drew ire from critics who felt it was misguided given the circumstances.
Political consultant Ken Friedman remarked, “Bill de Blasio furnished Gracie Mansion with West Elm, and here’s Mamdani, sending a similar message with his Carhartt. His focus should be on the New Yorkers suffering out there, not customized apparel.”
Another voice, political consultant Hank Shenkopf, added, “If he truly represented socialist ideals, he’d be giving jackets to the homeless from his own funds. How can he understand their plight if he’s never faced a struggle?”
This clash of priorities seems to have deepened as the city grapples with the aftermath of the storm, with reports surfacing about those who succumbed to extreme temperatures while trash accumulates throughout the boroughs.
