William Stevenson Arrested for Murder of Ex-Wife
William “Bill” Stevenson, the ex-husband of former first lady Jill Biden, was arrested on Monday and charged with first-degree murder relating to the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson.
This arrest, announced on Tuesday by authorities in Delaware, comes after a lengthy investigation into a domestic dispute that occurred late last year.
According to the New Castle County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to the couple’s residence on Idlewood Road on December 28, 2025, after receiving reports of a domestic incident shortly after 11 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found 64-year-old Linda unresponsive in their living room. Despite immediate attempts at life-saving measures by both police and medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
After her death, the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences performed an autopsy and launched a thorough investigation that ultimately led to her husband facing murder charges. Initially, police had mentioned a “cardiac arrest” in dispatch audio, but a grand jury indictment followed further forensic investigations by the Department of Justice.
Stevenson was taken into custody on Monday afternoon after enough evidence was gathered. He was arraigned before a judge and is currently detained at the Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in Wilmington, having been unable to post the $500,000 cash bail.
A representative from the Delaware Attorney General’s Office confirmed the murder charge. It’s still unclear if Stevenson has secured legal representation.
Linda Stevenson, married to Bill for nearly 40 years, was a recognized local bookkeeper who had just started her own bookkeeping firm. Her obituary described her as a passionate and loyal individual, but notably did not mention her husband.
William Stevenson previously gained recognition as the founder of the Stone Balloon, a famous music venue in Newark, Delaware, hosting legendary acts from the Allman Brothers Band to Metallica. He was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to their contentious divorce in late 1975. The Bidens stated they met on a blind date in March 1975, a claimed timeline that Stevenson has publicly disputed for years.
A spokesperson for Jill Biden has indicated that she will not provide any comments regarding the ongoing legal case.
In the time since their separation, Stevenson has been a vocal critic of both his ex-wife and the Biden family. In his 2024 memoir, he asserted that the official narrative of the Bidens’ early relationship is fictional, claiming it actually began in 1974 while Jill was still married to him. He has referred to various incidents suggesting that Jill was manipulated by the Biden family during their divorce, including facing legal threats and politically motivated tax issues.
In recent years, he has increasingly criticized Jill’s role in the public eye, accusing her of being a significant influence in keeping Joe Biden in politics longer than suitable.
