Gavin Newsom Reflects on Marriage in Upcoming Memoir
California Governor Gavin Newsom has opened up about his past marriage to Kimberly Guilfoyle, describing himself as a cold partner. In excerpts from his forthcoming memoir, he candidly acknowledges that he was “just going through the motions.”
Newsom mentions they married during a time when he was reportedly “getting better at controlling my emotions,” reflecting on a complicated emotional landscape. He notes, “Mr. Kimberly allowed me this emotional distance.”
The couple, once labeled as the “new Kennedys,” wed in 2001 while Newsom held the position of mayor in San Francisco. However, he now suggests their relationship felt more obligatory than deeply connected.
Before their vows, Newsom recalls the lead-up to their wedding as merely “going through the motions until the motions led me to the altar.”
Guilfoyle, who later became known for her relationship with Donald Trump Jr. and her role as the U.S. ambassador to Greece, filed for divorce in 2005. She cited their demanding careers as a primary reason, as they often lived on opposite coasts.
During their separation, Newsom had an affair with a colleague’s spouse, a betrayal he calls “the worst” experience of his life. He reflects, “I thought of myself as a single guy who happened to be mayor. If my head had been straight, things would have been the other way around.”
Though he touches on past relationships, including a brief encounter with a young model, Newsom is reportedly reluctant to elaborate on these topics in his memoir. Additionally, he mentions breaking up with actress Sofia Milos at the suggestion of oil tycoon Gordon Getty, who advised him he wasn’t the right match for her.
