California gubernatorial candidates describe Gavin Newsom in one word

The tumultuous gubernatorial race in California gained some clarity Tuesday night, as candidates were tasked with describing Gov. Gavin Newsom’s tenure in a single word.

During the live CNN debate, seven candidates who are still in the running made their pitches in a contest that lacks a definitive leader, with heated discussions around taxes, gas prices, and immigration taking center stage.

An intriguing moment unfolded when the host posed a straightforward question.

“If you could sum up Governor Newsom’s accomplishments as governor in one word, what would it be?”

Villaraigosa: “Performative”

Porter: “That’s bold.”

Steyer: “Progressive”

Hilton: “I failed.”

Bianco: “It’s a failure.”

Becerra: ‘Change the game’

Mahan: “Unfinished”

The candidates’ responses revealed significant divisions, not just along party lines but also among their own ranks.

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s use of “performative” indicated frustration with what some perceive as superficial leadership, while former Rep. Katie Porter and billionaire Tom Steyer viewed the governor more favorably, highlighting his assertive liberal policies.

Republicans were particularly direct in their criticisms. Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and media figure Steve Hilton expressed similar concerns about the governor.

Interestingly, even some Democrats didn’t seem overly enthusiastic. Former federal official Xavier Becerra referred to Newsom as a “game changer,” but San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan’s “unfinished business” remark hinted at ongoing issues like affordability and homelessness in the state.

As California grapples with various challenges, the discussion surrounding Newsom’s legacy and the race to succeed him continues to evolve.
