Major Drug Bust in Nassau County

Authorities have apprehended two convicted murderers who were found hiding approximately $20 million worth of cocaine in a vehicle outside a hotel on Long Island. This seizure appears to be one of the largest drug busts in the history of Nassau County, as announced by officials on Tuesday.

“That’s an astounding amount of cocaine. This isn’t a joke,” commented Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder. The police are now looking into how these men, who have previous murder convictions from Puerto Rico, were able to be on the streets.

Michael Vieira, 40, and Daniel Santana, 35, drove from Florida to Nassau County on a Thursday to conduct a drug deal outside the Plainview Holiday Inn, where they acquired nearly 700 pounds of cocaine, just before police intervened and made the arrests at the end of the transaction.

“This may be one of the biggest drug busts we’ve ever seen,” stated Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, while showcasing the seized drugs to reporters.

While the details surrounding the murders committed by the two Puerto Ricans living in Florida remain unclear, authorities confirmed that both men were sentenced in Puerto Rico.

“Right now, we lack information about how they were released,” Ryder mentioned, noting that they were previously convicted in Puerto Rico.

Narcotics agents had been monitoring the hotel after receiving tips about drug trafficking, which is recognized as a hot spot for such illegal activities.

After witnessing the exchange, police halted Vieira and Santana’s vehicle and found a suitcase containing over 300 kilograms of cocaine. Authorities estimated the wholesale value of the drugs to be around $20 million, which could nearly double if the cocaine were to be mixed with substances like baking soda or fentanyl.

Both men face charges of drug possession and were arraigned on Sunday. They pleaded not guilty and were denied bail.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly has since escalated the charges against the suspects to include drug trafficking and operating as large-scale traffickers, which could lead to life sentences upon conviction.

“There’s no question this bust has saved lives. Had this made it to the streets, it could have resulted in fatal overdoses, especially among young people,” Ms. Donnelly remarked.
