NEW YORK — A Smooth Return for the Lakers
Tuesday night unfolded just as the Lakers had hoped.
Star guard Austin Reeves returned to the lineup against the Brooklyn Nets after missing almost two months with a strained left calf. His presence was a welcome boost, giving the Lakers a fully healthy squad for a change.
They wrapped up their longest road trip of the season with a 125-109 win over the Nets at Barclays Center, which felt pretty great.
Even coming off the bench and on limited minutes, Reeves showed promise, hinting at his potential for All-Star caliber play. He managed to score 15 points, grabbing four rebounds, while shooting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and 3-of-9 from the field during his 21 minutes.
LeBron James led the charge with 25 points, seven assists, and three rebounds, as the Lakers maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout most of the game. Luka Doncic played well too, adding 24 points, 14 of which came during a solid first quarter, plus six rebounds and five assists.
Given the non-competitive nature of the game and the absence of some rotation players in the second half, Reeves started the second half in place of Jake LaRabia. This hints that once Reeves is back in the starting lineup, it could feature Doncic, Reaves, James, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton.
Leading 69-40 at halftime, the Lakers even had a 39-point advantage in the third quarter.
The Nets, now sitting at 13-36, have lost 17 out of their last 20 games.
What It Means
The Lakers concluded their “Grammy” road trip with a solid record, finishing 5-3 since they kicked things off with a win over the Denver Nuggets on January 20.
With this victory, their season record improved to 30-19, marking an 18-11 performance on the road, which is one of the top records in the Western Conference.
Turning Point
The key moment? When the entire Lakers team bus arrived at Barclays Center. They faced a bit of a weather fiasco—New York streets were covered in snow and ice from a winter storm, making things tricky for everyone. Coach JJ Redick was notably 20 minutes late to the pregame media availability.
But once the Lakers were on the court, the outcome seemed pretty certain against a Nets team struggling recently, having lost by wide margins in previous games.
MVP: Luka Doncic
The Western Conference Player of the Month for January was able to take it a bit easier on Tuesday after a solid road trip. His playmaking and effective shooting (he went 4-of-5 early) helped the Lakers seize control right from the start.
Game Status: 83.3%
That was the Lakers’ field goal percentage by the end of the first quarter, establishing a commanding start to a game that offered little suspense.
They hit 15 of 18 shots and 11 of 17 from the free-throw line in that opening frame, leading 45-23 as they headed into the second quarter.
To the Next
After spending 11 consecutive days away from Southern California, the Lakers are finally looking forward to an extended homestand. They kick off an eight-game homestand on Thursday against the 76ers, right before All-Star Weekend (February 13-15).
Fifteen of their next 18 games will be played at Crypto.com Arena.
