Cracker Barrel staff are now required to cover their own alcohol expenses while traveling for work and are encouraged to dine at their locations as much as possible, according to a recent internal message. This news was initially brought to light by the Wall Street Journal, which indicated that employees should aim to have most of their meals at Cracker Barrel restaurants depending on their travel arrangements.
The company has also implemented a policy that prohibits staff from claiming alcohol as an expense while traveling, with any exceptions needing prior approval.
In response to inquiries, Cracker Barrel clarified that the directive to eat at their locations is not a new policy. They further mentioned that employees have more options for dining while on the road.
The rationale behind these changes appears to be a move to limit reimbursements for alcoholic beverages more strictly. Interestingly, Cracker Barrel expanded its drink menu to include beer and wine back in 2021.
These policy changes come on the heels of significant public scrutiny faced by Cracker Barrel last year, following backlash concerning a failed logo redesign and some modifications to the restaurant’s decor.
Some long-time customers have voiced concerns that the quality of food at Cracker Barrel has declined over the years, noting the disappearance of popular dishes and the introduction of shortcuts in food preparation.
During a recent investor call, CEO Julie Masino acknowledged that the company’s performance in the first quarter didn’t meet expectations, describing the situation as challenging and forecasting a lengthy recovery process. According to reports, there was a 5.7% decline in year-on-year sales during the first quarter of fiscal 2026.
In an effort to win back customer loyalty, Cracker Barrel has announced a revival of some classic menu items such as hamburger steak and eggs in a basket.
Masino expressed confidence in the team’s dedication to restoring the brand’s momentum, although she noted that this recovery would take time.
