Maryland Freedom Caucus Critiques Sign on Transgender Athletes
The Maryland Freedom Caucus, which consists of Republican delegates in the state’s General Assembly, recently shared on social media a sign believed to be put up by a Democratic member. This sign downplays concerns regarding transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
Notably, this sign was reportedly displayed on Wednesday, coinciding with National Women and Girls Sports Day.
It was signed by the Maryland Congressional LGBTQ+ Caucus and was placed in the offices of Democratic delegates Eric Ebersole and Nick Allen.
The sign asserts that “trans women have no competitive advantage” in women’s sports. However, a 2021 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicated that even after a year of receiving hormone therapy, transgender women retain a competitive edge over biological females.
A separate note highlighted that the sign’s message included statements like “Anti-dignity policies endanger transgender youth,” “Banning transgender youth is illegal,” and “Aggressive coercion creates fear.”
Fox News Digital has sought responses from Ebersole, Allen, and the Maryland LGBTQ+ Caucus regarding the sign.
This online post comes just a day before the Maryland General Assembly plans to vote on the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. This proposed legislation aims to require specific schools to designate school-sponsored teams based on biological sex and to prohibit certain actions against schools that maintain these separate teams or locker rooms for female students.
Currently, 27 states across the U.S. have implemented similar laws that restrict transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
