Trump Marks Milestone of 'Historic Win' in Mexican-American War

President Trump Commemorates the 178th Anniversary of the Mexican-American War

This week, President Trump marked the 178th anniversary of the Mexican-American War. The timing coincides with the release of Peter Schweitzer’s new book, which raises some provocative issues around immigration and its effects.

The message from the White House celebrated the significant outcomes of the war, noting that Mexico ceded territories such as California, Nevada, and Arizona to the U.S., as well as recognizing Texas’s annexation.

“Today is a momentous occasion reflecting our victory in the Mexican-American War,” Trump stated. “This battle secured the American Southwest and underscored our nation’s sovereignty.” He mentioned the war’s backdrop, including the aftermath of the War of 1812, and how Americans were driven by the belief in Manifest Destiny, which fueled westward expansion.

Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836, and after they voted to join the Union in 1846, tensions escalated when Mexican forces ambushed U.S. soldiers along the Rio Grande. This prompted President James K. Polk to act swiftly in declaring war on Mexico. The American military, although outnumbered, secured victories using superior strategies.

The capture of Mexico City in 1847 ultimately led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which transferred approximately 525,000 square miles of land to the U.S., altering the country’s size significantly.

Last year, Trump highlighted how the outcomes of the Mexican-American War influenced his administration’s approach to immigration, asserting that it led to a notable decrease in illegal immigration from Mexico and related drug overdose deaths.

“My administration is making strides in halting drug trafficking and illegal immigration,” he claimed. He cited various international trade agreements and highlighted efforts to maintain security in the region.

On this anniversary, we reflect on America’s military history and honor those who sacrificed for their country. Their legacy fuels our commitment to sovereignty and the strength of the American spirit.

In contrast, former Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarkán expressed strong disapproval of Trump’s remarks. He remarked that the current state of U.S.-Mexico relations has seen unprecedented tension, likening Trump’s message to a provocation.

As Trump’s views come under scrutiny, Schweitzer’s new book, along with its findings about alleged Mexican interference in U.S. elections, has raised eyebrows among officials. The book reports on what Schweitzer describes as a coordinated effort by the Mexican government to influence American politics through consulates.

He mentions past large-scale protests organized in support of illegal immigrants, showcasing a history of political activism that some allege is backed by Mexico.
