Mamdani Endorses Hochul for Re-Election

Mayor Zoran Mamdani officially threw his support behind Governor Kathy Hochul’s re-election on Thursday, suggesting that despite previous “minor issues” that strained ties between City Hall and Albany, a new chapter has begun.

Democratic socialists celebrated their “exemplary” collaboration with Hochul in progressive circles, even as both recognized their differences. Mamdani stated, “New Yorkers deserve a leader who believes in change. A leader who understands that hope is inspired by vision and sustained by change.”

He highlighted Hochul’s governance style, asserting, “Governor Kathy Hochul has earned my support because she chooses to govern in that spirit.”

Mamdani pointed out efforts at the city and state level to enhance universal child care and combat U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s deportation measures.

His remarks suggested a strong partnership between the leaders despite their varying viewpoints. He praised Hochul for protecting vital funding and infrastructure projects during challenging times, indirectly alluding to threats from Washington, particularly referencing former President Trump.

“Together, we have forged a new era in Albany’s relationship with City Hall after too many years defined by trivialities rather than productivity,” he noted. “In a moment of crisis, we chose a different path.”

Hochul’s relationship with former Mayor Eric Adams has been rocky at times, unlike the adversarial dynamic seen between previous leaders like Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio.

However, Mamdani admitted that their views on raising taxes for the wealthiest are quite different, acknowledging this disparity in his op-ed. He stated, “The Governor and I do not agree on everything.”

He argued for necessary tax increases to fund his ambitious agenda and cover a $12 billion budget shortfall, while Hochul has consistently vowed not to raise taxes, at least until after the November elections.

In response to Mamdani’s endorsement, Hochul thanked him, expressing anticipation for their continued alliance in making New York City more affordable and enhancing public safety.

Though Hochul supported Mamdani during his mayoral campaign after he emerged victorious in a crowded primary, Mamdani hesitated to reciprocate that support earlier on Thursday.

Hochul is aiming for a second term and is expected to face Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, who is positioning himself to the left in the upcoming primary.

The state Republican Committee reacted to the endorsement, claiming the New York Democratic Party is now fully under the influence of radical left elements, and encouraged voters to consider Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman as Hochul’s potential Republican competitor.

“New Yorkers who want to check the extremism of Mr. Mamdani and Mr. Hochul have one choice: elect Governor Bruce Blakeman in November and vote Republican at every level of government,” a NYGOP spokesperson stated.

Hochul ascended to her role as state leader in 2021 and secured her first full term in 2022.
