Controversy Surrounds Los Angeles Mayor’s Involvement in Fire Report
A recent survey by the Los Angeles Times revealed that Democratic Mayor Karen Bass may have influenced changes to the official after-action report regarding the devastating Palisades fire from January 2025, which resulted in multiple fatalities and the destruction of thousands of structures.
According to sources familiar with her office, Mayor Bass voiced concerns that the initial draft could potentially expose the city to legal liabilities, particularly regarding the Los Angeles Fire Department’s (LAFD) preparation and response. She was worried that highlighting tactical shortcomings might contradict city policy and increase legal risks.
Reportedly, Bass requested significant cuts to key findings that criticized the LAFD, leading to a revised report being published despite officials warning that such revisions could fuel a major scandal.
When the after-action report was finally released in October, it notably omitted a section that criticized the LAFD for not pre-deploying units in anticipation of severe winds. Instead, the report framed the department’s actions in a positive light, suggesting their response was in line with standard protocols.
This revised account starkly contrasts with the fire’s catastrophic consequences, which claimed 12 lives, destroyed over 6,800 structures, and inflicted roughly $25 billion in direct damage.
It’s uncertain how closely LAFD Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva and other department officials were involved in these changes, as Villanueva held the position from February to November 2025. Currently, Jamie E. Moore serves as the fire chief.
After the report’s release, Bass’s team denied any direct involvement in its revisions, asserting that the mayor only asked for a review to ensure factual accuracy. Her spokeswoman, Clara Karger, emphasized that Bass has consistently expressed concerns about the LAFD’s response to the fires, pointing to new management and calls for an independent review of fire safety procedures.
“There was no motive to alter the report when she herself has been critical,” Karger added.
This issue adds to a series of challenges for Bass regarding her administration’s response to the Palisades tragedy, which has already faced intense scrutiny over chaotic evacuations and a controversial budget cut to the LAFD prior to the fire.
Community members are increasingly uneasy, demanding transparency as residents and some former officials accuse the administration of a cover-up regarding the report’s discrepancies.
Moreover, additional investigations confirmed that the catastrophic Palisades fire originated from a smaller wildfire known as the “Luckman Fire,” which ignited on January 1, 2025. Although firefighters initially reported the blaze as under control, it smoldered for days before strong winds reignited it, leading to the larger disaster.
