Kangaroo Rescued by Virginia Deputies

Deputies in Virginia were surprised to encounter a kangaroo hopping along a snow-covered road, injured and causing a traffic jam.

Early Saturday morning, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office received a report about what was thought to be a threatening dog at the Allington Wildlife Refuge, which led to injuries for the kangaroo. Local reports noted the situation’s unusual nature.

In an act of courage, the mother kangaroo jumped over a fence, inadvertently dropping her baby, and managed to distract the dog to protect her joey, according to deputies.

Eventually, she was found at the intersection of Thomas Nelson Highway and Oak Ridge Road, where conditions had worsened due to snow and freezing temperatures.

Even though the kangaroo left a blood trail and was injured, capturing her proved difficult. “I don’t even know if the lasso worked… she was already across the field when I got out of the car,” Deputy Robert Richardson recounted.

With assistance from Andrew Sandra, a conservation officer with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, the officers finally cornered the kangaroo in a nearby yard.

When the animal calmed down, her owner was called in to help safely transport her to a wildlife sanctuary, where she was joyfully reunited with her baby.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office later announced that the kangaroo is expected to recover fully. Interestingly, this won’t be the last interaction for the deputies and the kangaroos—there’s an upcoming Chili Cook-Off & Touch a Truck event on March 14th where they are set to appear.
