Javier Báez Withdraws from World Baseball Classic
Javier Báez appears to have made the decision to pull out of this year’s World Baseball Classic.
Initially, Báez was expected to represent Puerto Rico in the tournament, but he became ineligible due to a previous marijuana use issue. Reports indicate that he was suspended for two years from competing in World Baseball Softball Confederation tournaments, effective from April 26, 2024, to April 26, 2026, following a positive drug test during the 2023 WBC.
With this year’s tournament set to kick off in early March, his suspension will be in effect. Although Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association looked into reinstating his eligibility, the World Baseball Softball Confederation maintained its policy regarding drug use.
It’s worth noting that MLB has permitted marijuana use since the 2020 season, which means Báez did not break any league rules and won’t face any penalties from them.
This situation adds to the challenges facing Team Puerto Rico as they work to finalize their roster for the WBC. Several players, including Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, have also been ruled out for various reasons, particularly related to insurance issues.
Lindor expressed disappointment about not being able to play this year after undergoing elbow surgery in October. He mentioned he would be ready for spring training, as confirmed by a statement from the players’ association.
In addition to Lindor, players like Carlos Correa from the Astros, José Berríos from the Blue Jays, and Victor Caratini from the Twins are also unable to participate, leading Team Puerto Rico officials to consider the possibility of withdrawing from the tournament altogether.
“That option is definitely on the table,” said Joey Sola, the operations manager for Team Puerto Rico. He further mentioned that the team will need to find replacement players before making a final decision.
