A cherished Nassau County police officer, who lost her life due to a suspected drunk driver last weekend, has been laid to rest. The Long Island culinary scene has united to offer support to her family, particularly for the devoted mother who was known for her strict yet loving nature.

Nassau Police Chief Patrick Ryder shared memories of the deceased officer, Patricia Espinosa, noting that she had recently been involved in a heroic act where she tackled a man attempting to break into a home and stab someone.

“But, in a remarkable turn, she went out afterward to rescue two kittens, trying to find them a loving home,” Ryder added.

Espinosa, 42, was tragically killed by 20-year-old Matthew Smith while on her way to work on January 31, 2026. She leaves behind a young daughter and is fondly remembered for her dedication to supporting local Hispanic residents, once even driving around in her prom dress to connect with her community.

“She arrived here without knowing English, but she learned, passed her tests, and became a police officer at the 5th Precinct,” Ryder said. Espinosa had immigrated from Ecuador at the age of 21.

“At that precinct, she met her husband, and they started a family together. It’s heart-wrenching, especially knowing her daughter will grow up without her,” Ryder reflected.

In response to the family’s need, more than 200 local pizzerias have come together through the LI Pizza Strong initiative to raise money for a fund aimed at supporting Espinosa’s family. They’re asking pizzerias nationwide to contribute $5 for every pizza sold on February 25th.

Additionally, supporters have already raised over $260,000 on GoFundMe to honor Espinosa’s memory and assist with funeral expenses.

Espinosa was hit early that Saturday morning when Smith crashed his truck into her vehicle on Route 347 near Smith Haven Mall.

In a cruel twist of fate, her husband, Francisco Malaga, also an officer with the NCPD, arrived at the scene unaware that his wife was involved. “He stopped to assist and realized it was her,” Ryder recounted, mentioning that Malaga was off-duty at the time. “It’s a heartbreaking story that feels like it could be straight out of a movie.”

Espinosa is survived by her husband, their daughter Mia, and her two brothers, who also work in law enforcement.

During the wake, a police chaplain referred to Espinosa’s daughter as a “miracle baby.” Ryder later stated, “Like many young mothers, she was navigating the challenges of trying to conceive while balancing the demands of her job.”

“She was a wonderful mother, sensitive to the needs of her community, yet ready for action when called upon by the police,” Ryder noted.

Her family is in need of financial support, especially since she didn’t have a pension or death benefit associated with her service.

“Who’s going to step up? The community,” Ryder emphasized.

Anthony Laurino, a co-founder of LI Pizza Strong, also expressed the importance of the cause. “It’s something that really resonates with us,” he said. “These are our friends. Law enforcement is vital for our safety, and they put their lives on the line for us.”

Laurino, who owns Phil’s Pizza in Syosset, noted this initiative usually fosters community spirit, but this situation called for a broader approach.

He has gained a considerable online following, sharing comedic videos about customer antics, and he’s leveraging this influence to rally pizzerias nationwide for fundraising efforts.

“I’ve made many friends in the pizza community, and they’re eager to join in. We hope to make this something really significant,” he mentioned.

As word spreads, he anticipates more pizzerias from across the Tri-State area, and even locations in places as distant as Las Vegas and Florida, to join the cause.

Future initiatives will also focus on addressing drunk driving, with plans for expanding participation in the upcoming days.

LI Pizza Strong has partnered together for community causes since 2023, previously responding to tragedies like a devastating bus crash and the deaths of officers in the line of duty.

“People always rally together for these efforts,” said a co-founder affiliated with the “Dine LI” Facebook group, which boasts around 52,000 followers.

Fellow co-founder Jim Serpico remarked, “Our community has shown remarkable support.” He conveyed that this habitual coming together of pizzerias reflects their dedication.

Interestingly, Laurino finds this is one occasion where he doesn’t worry about the typical complaints from patrons. “Nobody minds waiting for their pizza today. It’s a truly heartwarming day,” he reflected.
