Radical Group Proves They're Insincere, Bows to the Governor

Political Moves in New York

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York is attempting to halt a seemingly radical maneuver, at least temporarily.

Ocasio-Cortez, along with fellow New York Democratic lawmakers, is backing Governor Cathy Hochul’s re-election campaign. Typically, Hochul presents herself as a moderate within the party.

On Friday, Ocasio-Cortez, along with 18 other House Democrats from New York, expressed their endorsement for Hochul, marking a shift in approach since she refrained from making significant endorsements in 2022.

In an article from The Nation, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani shared his support for Hochul, emphasizing collaborative efforts to protect New Yorkers. He noted, “Together, we have fought to protect New Yorkers from harm, including from ICE. We have safeguarded our party, our democracy, and enabled working New Yorkers to thrive in their beloved city.”

Despite their alliance, Mamdani admitted that he and Hochul don’t see eye to eye on several issues, particularly regarding taxation of the wealthy and deep income inequality. “The Democratic Party has thrived as a large tent, not by avoiding conflict but by channeling it towards progress,” he remarked.

This marks a notable shift from the more insular approach taken by Democrats during the Biden era. While Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez, and others seem inclined to adopt a more moderate approach, Hochul might be looking to Mamdani for guidance on future directions.

According to Jasmine Gripper, co-chair of the New York Working Families Party, “Governor Hochul and his team are addressing the affordability crisis for New Yorkers.” While they acknowledged Mamdani’s enthusiasm for success, Hochul had previously hesitated to support him in his mayoral race, citing the importance of the upcoming inauguration and her plans for the next four years.

In June 2025, she questioned Mamdani’s focus on raising taxes, stating, “I prioritize affordability, and increasing taxes on everyone isn’t the solution.” Ultimately, she decided to endorse him in the September 2025 mayoral election. Mamdani, however, reciprocated with skepticism, indicating his priorities lay elsewhere as the bigger picture unfolded.

Collaborating seems to be a more effective strategy than engaging in public disputes. Although this may alienate certain hard-line supporters, it’s often the price one pays in politics.
