Deion Sanders Rules Out NFL Coaching

Deion Sanders has made it clear—coaching in the NFL is not on his agenda. During a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” an NCAA coach posed the question of whether there was any chance for Sanders to go pro. His response was direct: nothing would sway him from his current path.

“That’s not true,” Sanders asserted. He pointed to the situation involving his son, Shedeur, commenting on last year’s unexpected events. “What happened last year is, well, unthinkable,” he remarked.

After that exchange, Sanders circled back to the topic of coaching in the NFL. “Thank you, Lord,” he expressed, “If I stop like that, it doesn’t mean I’m speechless. … God has said, ‘Now that you’re the head coach, that can’t happen. You can’t talk about that.’” It’s like he feels that as head coach, some boundaries need to be respected.

Since taking over as head coach of Colorado in 2023, Sanders has led the team to a record of 16-21 over three seasons. He also discussed Shedeur’s challenging rookie year with the Cleveland Browns, where he began the season as the third-string quarterback and ultimately started the last seven games.

“It’s been a tough year for our family,” Sanders reflected. “Nothing was blamed. We didn’t doubt him. We stood firm and fought back. And now, it’s our year. We’re ready to conquer everything.”

Shedeur had notable stats, throwing for 1,400 yards in eight games, completing 56.6% of his passes with seven touchdowns and ten interceptions. He even made it to the Pro Bowl as a substitute for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.

However, not everyone is convinced of his future. Former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck recently questioned whether Shedeur, a fifth-round pick in 2025, would even secure a backup spot next season. “Honestly, I don’t see him as the second guy heading into training camp,” Hasselbeck shared on ESPN’s “Get Up.” He added that securing a head coach’s position in the NFL is tough, and winning at the quarterback position is crucial.

It seems there’s some skepticism regarding Shedeur’s place, especially under current coach Todd Monken’s strategy moving forward.
