California nudist resort cuts power to residents after clothing demand: 'Naked and afraid'

Residents at a nudist resort in California are facing quite a challenge after the owner allegedly cut off the power in response to demands for clothing.

This action is the latest in an ongoing dispute between Olive Dell Ranch’s owners and its residents, a place known for embracing nudity since 1952.

Earlier this year, the owners implemented a “textile” policy that requires residents to wear clothing in public spaces. In response, residents filed a lawsuit against them, asserting that their civil liberties were infringed upon by this policy, which restricts their choice to be unclothed.

Cutting power had an immediate, harsh impact. Attorney Francis Campbell remarked that this action was essentially threatening her client’s safety by plunging them into darkness.

With many residents being elderly or disabled, the situation has become more precarious, especially when public services are unavailable.

Some residents find themselves without hot water, and others are unable to use essential medical devices. One resident, Jim Cramer, expressed concern about his pacemaker and his access to medical care, despite always being current with his payments.

Penny Ogg, another resident, mentioned that sleep has eluded her since the power went out. She relies on a nebulizer due to asthma and allergies, and the lack of electricity means she cannot use it.

However, it seems there’s a glimmer of hope. Officials from the health department recently visited and labeled the conditions unsafe, stressing that power must be restored promptly.

“We should have power back within a month,” Chevy Nelson, another resident, conveyed. She highlighted the strong sense of community among residents, emphasizing their support for one another.

Tensions escalated to the point where a physical altercation occurred between a resident photographing a missing meter and a park employee. Police were called and arrested both parties involved.

Since acquiring the property in 2019, the current owners have faced accusations of neglecting maintenance and pushing residents to leave. Amenities like swimming pools have fallen into disrepair, and the closure of community events has added to the residents’ frustrations.

The state of the roads and other facilities has also deteriorated, leading to concerns about safety, especially given that the front gate no longer locks, which raises fears of unwanted onlookers.

Legal representatives for the residents argue that the owners appear intent on ousting the nudist community, concealing their actions from broader visibility. The location itself is somewhat isolated, accessible only via a long dirt road.

The attorneys contend that the nudist identity of the residents is a distinctive characteristic, which they believe should be legally protected.

“Civil rights laws exist to protect individuals from discrimination based on their identity,” Campbell explained.

Residents are pursuing significant damages from the owners, citing multiple grievances, including breach of contract and civil rights violations. On a recent court day, Campbell indicated that the judge expressed frustration over the owner’s actions resembling a do-it-yourself eviction.

Reflecting on better days, Ogg once described the resort as an idyllic retreat where people lounged in the sun and could enjoy meals served right by the jacuzzi. “It was truly a family atmosphere,” she reminisced.
