Focus on the economy, Don — Democrats can't outdo you there

The intense ICE enforcement, particularly in Minneapolis, appears to be impacting President Trump and his party negatively, although there is still a potential route to success. The focus should ideally be on moderate immigration policies while highlighting economic stability, which they are stronger on.

If the middle ground is maintained, the extreme voices within the Democratic Party, who have long been pushing for the complete dismantling of ICE, could dominate the immigration narrative. Their view is that any form of immigration control is inherently illegal.

On this issue, Americans generally lean towards moderation rather than extremism.

However, it’s clear that Democrats are pushing their agenda in light of the public uproar regarding recent ICE incidents and the tragic deaths of individuals like Alex Preti and Renee Good.

Fueled by radical elements, the Democratic Party seems to have adopted a rather extreme stance, with calls to “shut down the government!”

Meanwhile, Sen. Chuck Schumer and others have managed to broker a deal that prevents extremists from escalating tensions and risking a government shutdown that could impact a significant portion of federal operations. Presently, a critical threat exists regarding potential cuts to the Department of Homeland Security funding, slated to start around February 14th.

Despite this, Democratic leaders seem hesitant to really engage in addressing the conflict—perhaps understandably so. Their current stance includes calls for stricter regulations on ICE and the Border Patrol, nearly ceasing enforcement altogether.

This situation is further complicated because the funding related to ICE was secured through last year’s legislation.

This means Democrats seem more focused on inconveniencing TSA workers at airports and delaying FEMA disaster assistance during urgent situations—quite puzzling.

Importantly, Trump has already taken some precautions: he reassigned 700 federal employees from Minneapolis, withdrew certain officials from the Department of Homeland Security, and compelled border officials to engage with Minnesota state and local leaders for better cooperation.

A significant majority of Americans support immigration enforcement that respects law and order, which contrasts starkly with what has been seen in Minneapolis.

Ideally, the nation would reach a consensus on immigration: strong borders, sensible domestic enforcement, and a pathway to legal residency for individuals who arrived here possibly unlawfully but have since integrated into society—along with sensible criteria for legal immigration that addresses national needs.

For now, however, Trump’s team should adhere to the president’s commitment to targeting the “worst offenders” and continue with law enforcement efforts while reducing in-person investigations.

If Democrats remain entrenched in their resistance, any disruptions to ICE operations instigated by overly zealous protesters could ultimately mitigate the negative impact of the Minneapolis disturbances on Republicans.

In any case, Republicans must prioritize the economy, which remains the foremost concern for Americans.

People are looking for further reductions in inflation—hopefully lower than what was seen during the previous administration. Economic growth appears to be strengthening, with projections reflecting a robust GDP growth around 4% for the third quarter and similar expectations for the subsequent quarters.

The stock market also remains strong, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching over 50,000 recently.

The Republican leadership, right from the president, should continue dialogues on boosting employment and enhancing real wages. Let the Democrats dwell on issues unrelated to this.

Sure, there are provocations from Democratic leaders, but Trump’s sensitivity can be a double-edged sword.

Yet, if he maintains composure, stays focused, and emphasizes the Republican agenda on affordability, both the country and the party could be on a promising trajectory.
