Luke Kennard of the Lakers receives approval to shoot from Redick

Luke Kennard Joins the Lakers

Luke Kennard made his way to Southern California on Friday after his trade to the Lakers. However, Coach JJ Redick quickly outlined one of Kennard’s main goals as he prepares to play for the team.

Kennard is recognized as one of the NBA’s elite 3-point shooters. His impressive career percentage of 44.2% ranks as the second-highest in league history for eligible players. Yet, there’s some doubt surrounding his shooting consistency, particularly as he joins the Lakers for their match against the Warriors.

Some critics argue that Kennard hesitates to take shots, seemingly more focused on protecting his shooting percentage than being aggressive. Despite this, his average of 3.2 attempts from beyond the arc places him 54th among 68 players with at least a 38% shooting rate who have played in at least 30 games this season.

“I’m excited for Luke,” Redick shared. “I’ve known him for around 12 years. I believe he’s one of the best shooters in the league, and I’ll definitely encourage him to be more assertive with his shot selection.”

Interestingly, both Kennard and Redick share a background at Duke University, where Kennard was drafted 12th overall in 2017. Like Redick, he has become a dangerous offensive player, especially coming off screens.

“One of the lesser-known strengths of his game is his movement off the ball, which can help initiate offensive plays,” Redick noted. “He can capitalize on off-ball movements and will pose a considerable threat from various angles. We’re eager to have him on our team.”

Interestingly, Kennard is well-acquainted with some of his new teammates. Marcus Smart and Jake LaRabia played alongside him in Memphis, where they developed a rapport that they hope to continue in Los Angeles.

“It was great playing with Luke in Memphis,” Smart said, emphasizing Kennard’s shooting prowess and work ethic. “He’s committed and talented, and I’m looking forward to continuing what we started there.”

Even those less familiar with Kennard are aware of how his addition will enhance the team’s performance. Austin Reeves highlighted Kennard’s ability to stretch the floor and create opportunities: “If you give him room, you know it’s likely to go in. His understanding of the game will greatly benefit us.”

While the Lakers are thrilled about Kennard’s arrival, there’s some bittersweetness as Gabe Vincent, who was also traded to the Hawks alongside a future second-round pick, is missed by teammates and coaches. Redick reflected on Vincent’s contributions: “He was well-respected for his professionalism and had the potential for a breakout season. Sadly, injuries held him back.”

“Gabe is not just a great player; he’s an even better person. I’ve expressed my gratitude to him repeatedly. We’re truly thankful for the time we had with him.”
