Alperen Sengun Reflects on Controversial Incident with Referee

Houston Rockets player Alperen Sengun is hoping to move forward after a recent controversy.

Following the Rockets’ 112-106 win over the Thunder, Sengun expressed regret for his inappropriate remarks directed at a female referee earlier in the week. The 23-year-old was ejected from a game against the Celtics after repeatedly using derogatory language towards official Jenna Reneau.

Speaking to reporters, Sengun called his behavior immature. “It was just in the moment, and I said something I shouldn’t have,” he admitted, adding, “I felt bad.” His comments gained attention on social media as details emerged about his rant.

After the game, Sengun took the initiative to apologize directly to Reneau. “Sometimes you can’t control yourself, but I should have known better,” he reflected, noting that he approached her in the officials’ locker room to make amends. “I held out my hand and told her it won’t happen again. It was good for both parties,” he said.

Sengun, now in his fifth season with the Rockets, has emerged as a key player alongside 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant. This season, he’s averaging 20.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists, with a shooting percentage close to 50.

Despite his strong performance, Sengun did not receive an All-Star selection this year, which many saw as an oversight. He expressed disappointment but remains hopeful for future opportunities. “It was disappointing, but it happens,” he acknowledged. “There are a lot of talented players in the league, and I’m still young. I believe I’ll be successful in due time and that drives me to work harder.”

Looking ahead, he remains focused on his goals, stating, “I have to work harder and be more disciplined, and hopefully, I’ll have a long career in the NBA with multiple All-Star selections.”
