Oklahoma State University Fined for Inappropriate Chants
Oklahoma State University has been penalized with a $50,000 fine after an investigation revealed inappropriate chants referencing Mormons during a recent men’s basketball game against BYU, according to a statement from the Big 12 Conference on Sunday.
Following Oklahoma State’s narrow victory over BYU with a score of 99-92, BYU’s head coach, Kevin Young, reported that he heard chants from the student section that included derogatory language aimed at Mormons.
The Big 12’s announcement mentioned, “In accordance with the conference’s sportsmanship principles and standards, the fine was imposed due to chants that were deemed inappropriate during the game.”
Oklahoma State acknowledged the fine and stated they would not contest it. “The references to religion did not align with our standards,” the university said. They continued, “We respect the Big 12’s decision and have no plans to appeal the fine.”
This incident marks at least the fourth instance in the last year where BYU’s team has been subjected to anti-Mormon chants. For example, in September, Colorado was fined $50,000 for similar behavior by fans during a game against the Cougars. Other instances have occurred at an Arizona basketball game and a Cincinnati football game, though no penalties were issued in those cases.
BYU Athletic Director Brian Santiago expressed commitment to eradicating such derogatory behavior. “We’re focused on preventing these kinds of actions and the subsequent apologies that often follow,” he remarked.
