Increased Chances of Reunion between Rodgers and McCarthy
A reunion between Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy seems to be on the rise.
Rodgers recently had a conversation with his newly appointed Steelers coach—who, coincidentally, was his coach during their time with the Packers. They discussed the possibility of him playing for his 22nd season in the NFL, and his second with Pittsburgh.
McCarthy, who led Rodgers in Green Bay from 2006 to 2018, was hired to replace Mike Tomlin just last month.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, “Rodgers hasn’t yet made a decision about returning for his 22nd season, but it appears more likely now.” He noted that Rodgers has engaged in several discussions with McCarthy, who played a significant role in shaping him into a four-time MVP and Super Bowl champion.
Additionally, Rodgers has spoken to wide receiver DK Metcalf, who expressed his desire to see Rodgers return for what would be his age 42 season. It seems the plan is for Rodgers to take some time before deciding, with hopes that a decision might emerge by mid-March when free agency begins.
Pelissero added, “This is Aaron Rodgers we’re talking about. Only he knows how this will play out in the end.” He went on to say that if Rodgers plans to return, a deal will need to be made, but it wouldn’t come as a shock if he does return to the Steelers.
At 42, Rodgers led the Steelers to a 10-7 record and the AFC North title in his inaugural year, starting 16 games and throwing for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Unfortunately, they fell 30-6 to the Texans in the wild card round.
Over the last two seasons, Rodgers has played with the Jets, and he previously mentioned that he was “pretty sure” the 2025 season would be his last in the NFL.
Upon becoming the Steelers’ coach, McCarthy stated he was “absolutely” open to the idea of having the four-time MVP return as starting quarterback for the 2026 season.
