Mets agree to one-year contract with MJ Melendez

Mets Sign Outfielder MJ Melendez for 2026 Season

The Mets have bolstered their roster with some positional flexibility for the 2026 season, signing outfielder MJ Melendez to a one-year, $1.5 million deal. The agreement also includes performance-based incentives that can add up to $500,000.

This 27-year-old outfielder was once a highly regarded top-100 prospect, though he hasn’t quite managed to achieve that initial promise in the majors. His recent track record reflects a struggle to convert potential into consistent performance.

Last season was particularly tough for Melendez, as he hit only .083 with just one home run across 23 MLB games, primarily spending his time with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate. However, he did show some spark in the minors, boasting a .261 batting average, along with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.

Looking back, from 2022 to 2024, Melendez maintained a minimum of 16 home runs each year, and he participated in at least 128 games each season. Yet, his offensive metrics, notably wRC+, never exceeded 97 during that period.

Drafted by the Royals as a catcher in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Melendez made his MLB debut in 2022. The Royals eventually transitioned him to a full-time left fielder, primarily due to roster congestion with catchers like Salvador Perez and Freddy Fermin.

Royals general manager JJ Piccolo mentioned that shifting Melendez’s focus to the outfield might pay off. “It’s not a transfer because he hasn’t been great defensively,” Piccolo noted, admitting that while he has improved, activating Melendez’s bat is crucial for their offensive strategy.

With experience at catcher, first base, and both corner outfield spots, Melendez adds versatility to the Mets. He’ll likely compete for playing time, especially with top prospect Carson Benge expected to vie for opportunities in left field.
