Israeli Bobsled Team Faces Challenges Before Olympics

AJ Edelman was taken aback when he learned about the unfortunate events that struck Israel’s bobsled team, which he leads. Just days before their Olympic debut, the team was robbed and vandalized while one of their members was at a hotel in Prague, and Edelman was in Venice, Italy. A text from a teammate relayed the shocking news: their hotel room had been ransacked, and their belongings stolen.

“At first, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. It felt surreal,” Edelman shared. “I thought it might be a joke.” The investigation involved fingerprinting and a thorough examination following what they acknowledged as a serious break-in.

After the initial shock, the team rallied together. “Honestly, it felt like just another Tuesday to us,” Edelman commented. They agreed on moving forward, striving to reach their ultimate goal of Olympic qualification. “It’s not just about qualifying; it’s about making it to the Olympics,” he emphasized.

Despite feeling violated, Edelman recognized the team’s identity and commitment. “Whether we were targeted or not, we have to keep pushing ahead,” he added. Previously, they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2022 Beijing Games by just 0.01 seconds, yet they became the first bobsled team from Israel to qualify for the Winter Olympics. However, the team members also faced the reality of political turmoil when many were called to serve in the military shortly after the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023.

Living under challenging circumstances, Edelman, an MIT graduate, saw his financial situation worsen. He remarked on the tough choices he had to make, including selling his Bitcoin, which he believes could have been worth millions today.

Throughout their journey, the athletes have encountered various incidents, including a refusal to stay in Germany on Christmas Eve due to antisemitic sentiments. Edelman recounted instances where their team van was vandalized with hateful symbols. “Representing Israel comes with a lot of complexities, but we focus on being victors, not victims,” he stated.

Interestingly, Edelman expressed compassion for the individuals who committed the recent robbery. “It’s heartbreaking. I can’t imagine their circumstances. If what they did was out of desperation, I truly wish them better days ahead,” he reflected. “Though materials can be replaced, the deeper issues are harder to mend.”

With a playful nod to tradition, the team humorously named themselves “Shul Runnings,” a play on the classic film “Cool Runnings,” about Jamaica’s first bobsled team. Edelman recalled the inspiration and discussions he had with his brother, Alex, a well-known comedian, about the name.

As for their expectations in the upcoming Olympics, Edelman is realistic. While he doesn’t foresee them reaching the podium, he hopes to finish in the top 20, believing this would inspire other aspiring athletes in Israel.

Reflecting on their journey, Edelman emphasized the legacy they aim to leave behind: “In a few weeks, no one may remember our names, but the Israeli bobsled team’s achievements will resonate far beyond our individual stories.” As he prepares for his final competition, he looks forward to the impact their journey will have for future generations. “Though I’m retiring, the team’s accomplishments will endure,” he concluded.
