Patriots Struggle in Super Bowl Against Seahawks
SANTA CLARA — The Patriots’ offensive line faced significant challenges during the 2026 Super Bowl.
Seattle’s pass rush proved too much for New England, leaving quarterback Drake Maye constantly pressured.
This consistent pressure resulted in repeated punts and ultimately a 29-13 loss for the Patriots.
The Seahawks recorded six sacks on Maye, which included a fumble and contributed to two interceptions he threw.
New England’s pass protection has been problematic throughout the postseason.
With 20 sacks allowed—marking the highest in playoff history—the Patriots had managed to survive up to this point. However, the Super Bowl was a different story.
The Seahawks’ defense, known as the “Dark Side,” effectively utilized both straight rushes and blitzes against Maye.
Interestingly, the Patriots were the first in Super Bowl history to field two rookie starters on their offensive line: Will Campbell and Jared Wilson on the left side.
The rookies did not fare well that night.
For instance, Derrick Hall managed to disrupt Campbell, resulting in Wilson inadvertently colliding with him as Maye was sacked.
This was Hall’s second critical sack of the game.
As the third quarter neared its end with the Seahawks leading 12-0, the Patriots were attempting to generate some momentum. They had the ball at their own 44, but Hall got past tackle Morgan Moses, knocking the ball out of Maye’s hands.
Byron Murphy was quick to recover the fumble, giving the Seahawks prime field position at the New England 37.
Seattle’s secondary also made an impact on Maye’s performance.
Cornerback Devon Witherspoon managed to sack him while navigating through the right side of the Patriots’ defense, resulting in a considerable 10-yard loss.
Although Witherspoon didn’t register a second sack, a hit on Maye led to an interception by Uchenna Nwosu, which he returned for a touchdown.
Defensive lineman Murphy sacked Maye twice, with Riley Mills adding another sack to the tally.
The Seahawks’ relentless pressure clearly unsettled Maye, who struggled in contrast to his earlier successful NFL seasons.
With their roster undergoing reconstruction this offseason, the Patriots may need to seriously consider overhauling their offensive line and seeking additional support.
