Controversy Surrounds Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show

Bad Bunny’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl sparked immediate acclaim from several Democratic figures on Sunday night. The show, predominantly in Spanish, received backlash from many conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, who labeled it “absolutely awful” and one of the worst he’s ever seen.

Debate raged on about cultural differences and political divides surrounding the event. California Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated the occasion by declaring it “Bad Bunny Day” and expressed gratitude towards Latino trap artists on social media, stating, “America is beautiful. Thank you, Bad Bunny.”

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also praised Bad Bunny in Spanish, sharing a photo of him wearing an Ocasio 64 jersey and urging her supporters to rally. Meanwhile, New York City’s Mayor Zoran Mamdani echoed these sentiments, sharing a post lauding Latinx artists. Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett shared a picture of Bad Bunny styled like Barack Obama’s iconic 2008 poster, captioning it with, “Bad Bunny understands the mission…”

Senator Ruben Gallego from Arizona tweeted appreciation for Puerto Rican artists and responded to conservative criticisms of the performance, specifically targeting public figures like boxer Jake Paul and Rep. Andy Biggs. Former Vice President Kamala Harris’s newly created account on social media shared messages praising the show and critiquing Trump and Paul.

Trump’s remarks about the halftime show quickly became a major talking point, as he took to social media to voice his displeasure. He described the performance as nonsensical and an “insult to American greatness,” claiming it failed to reflect the nation’s values of success and creativity. He continued, saying the show was a “slap in the face” to the country, while dismissing the positive reviews he anticipated would come from the media.

Criticism of the show wasn’t limited to Trump; notable conservative voices expressed their disdain as well. Interestingly, the Super Bowl halftime show was expected to feature performances exclusively in Spanish. However, pop artist Lady Gaga surprised viewers by appearing and singing “Die With a Smile.”

Some fans opted to avoid the halftime show altogether, choosing instead to watch a separate performance organized by Turning Point USA featuring Kid Rock. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended Bad Bunny’s selection, asserting that the artist is among the best in the industry and understands the unifying potential of such a public platform. He expressed confidence that Bad Bunny would deliver a phenomenal performance.
