Man Sentenced for Running Over Kansas City Police Officer
A Kansas City man who struck a police officer with an ATV during a traffic stop last year has been sentenced to prison.
According to Kansas City Police, the incident occurred on April 12, 2025, when officers attempted to stop a group of ATV riders and motorcyclists for a traffic violation, as reported by KCTV.
Police shared that when an officer tried to apprehend Kendall Coleman, he reversed his ATV, causing the officer to fall. Coleman then executed a wheelie and struck the officer with both front tires before fleeing the scene.
After the assault, Coleman contacted his father, Mark Coleman, expressing that he was in trouble and needed to leave town, as noted in court documents.
Investigators tracked Mark Coleman’s vehicle using a license plate reader as it traveled westbound on Interstate 70 toward Colorado Springs. Authorities later discovered that Kendall Coleman had purchased a prepaid phone after disconnecting his own, and surveillance footage linked him to the ATV involved.
An anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers ultimately led to Kendall Coleman’s arrest on April 23, according to KCTV.
The officer suffered head injuries but has fully recovered, as reported by KMBC. Kendall Coleman pleaded guilty on Thursday.
In a plea agreement, armed criminal charges were dropped against the 28-year-old, allowing him to plead guilty to second-degree assault and aggravated fleeing. Initially, he faced a charge of first-degree assault.
Jackson County Circuit Judge Adam Kane sentenced Coleman to 12 years in prison. He remained in Jackson County Jail while awaiting transfer to the Missouri Department of Corrections.
A local restaurant owner, referring to ATV riders, expressed concerns, stating, “The noise, the aggression, they don’t follow any road rules—driving through intersections at high speeds.”
