NBC’s Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie is facing a deeply troubling situation as her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing for over a week. A tense deadline is approaching.
Reports indicate that ransom seekers have been in touch with the Guthrie family via media channels since last Monday, demanding a staggering $6 million in Bitcoin. It’s unclear whether this amount would actually secure Nancy’s release. Despite the Guthrie family’s heartfelt public appeals, there’s been no evidence that Nancy is alive, nor any effective line of communication with the alleged kidnappers.
The deadline of 5 PM on Monday has been described as much more serious than a previous one set last Thursday. This escalates the urgency of the situation.
Authorities are taking the ransom letters seriously. Harvey Levin from TMZ, who has seen the letter, noted that it contains details only the purported captors would know. Experts have explained that Bitcoin transactions can be incredibly swift and untraceable, even for large sums like $6 million. One expert mentioned that tracking such transactions is virtually impossible; you might see varying IP addresses across different locations, making it difficult to pinpoint any activity.
Interestingly, although Savannah and her husband had never dealt with cryptocurrencies before, they managed to quickly set up a wallet and process transactions seamlessly. One source shared, “It’s just a click away, but tracing where the money goes? Almost impossible.”
Reportedly, the Bitcoin wallet for the ransom remains empty, as revealed in an unconfirmed report by TMZ.
This case has attracted a lot of attention, with local and federal agencies working together to uncover more about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. Savannah, along with her siblings Annie and Cameron, recently made an emotional plea through Instagram for information regarding their mother’s whereabouts. They again offered to pay for her safe return.
In a message on Saturday, Savannah expressed, “I received and understood your message. We plead for you to give our mother back to us so we can have peace. We value her immensely and will pay.”
