The Chinese state-run publication, Global Times, commented on the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, suggesting that the United States is facing “deep divisions” and “social chaos” which is disrupting the country.
The newspaper referenced statements from three American athletes who expressed unease about representing their nation due to policies under President Donald Trump, particularly regarding immigration.
During a recent media briefing, freestyle skiers Hunter Hess and Chris Lillis voiced their reluctance to symbolize “everything happening” in the U.S., indicating a lack of pride linked to political differences with the current administration. Figure skater Amber Glenn, who identifies as “pansexual,” mentioned that the LGBTQIA2+ community in America is experiencing a “difficult time,” complicating her feelings about her country.
“Wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything happening in the United States,” Hess remarked, explaining that donning Team USA gear felt “a little bit difficult” as he wasn’t particularly fond of many current events.
Lillis expressed her sadness over the enforcement of immigration laws in the U.S., especially by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“I’m devastated by what has happened in the United States, especially regarding ICE, protests, and so on,” she shared, emphasizing the need for the nation to “respect everyone’s rights” and show compassion beyond just citizens.
Glenn elaborated that “queer” individuals are facing tough times under the Trump administration. She said, “Currently, it’s affecting not only the queer community but numerous others as well. We are supporting each other like never before, and I believe that strengthens us.” She added, “I hope to use my platform during these Olympics to inspire people to stay resilient through challenging periods.”
“I’m aware many tell athletes to refrain from political discussions, but politics impact all our lives,” she continued. “Sure, there are disagreements, yet as a community, we stand united, and I believe brighter days are ahead.”
Glenn subsequently mentioned on social media that she would be taking a “breather” due to perceived “hate” stemming from her statements.
Notably, the Chinese government is known for repressing public dissent. Chinese athletes tend not to comment on political matters, and those whose identities are politicized are often silenced. For instance, just before the last Winter Olympics in Beijing, tennis star Peng Shuai vanished after accusing a government official of assault. Although she briefly reappeared to quell global concern, her current status remains unknown.
The Global Times overlooked the challenges faced by Chinese athletes, focusing instead on the American athletes’ critiques. It quoted an official commentator who noted that their comments reflect growing anxiety due to social unrest related to immigration policies.
The report quoted Lu Xiang, who claimed, “While athletes aren’t directly involved in immigration policies, their willingness to speak out amid potential backlash shows the significant anxiety surrounding ICE activities affecting communities.” He suggested that immigration has become a pivotal issue in U.S. politics, one that is likely to continue impacting future elections.
In stark contrast, the Global Times praised the presence of Chinese athletes for their supposed “confidence” in representing the “rich heritage of the Beijing Winter Olympics,” while ignoring the potential risks they would face for opposing their government.
“Once the competition commenced, the Chinese audience was notably impressed by their mature viewing approach,” the publication noted, highlighting that some Chinese companies incorporated “Chinese elements” into Italian-hosted events, which supposedly instilled pride in the teams.
“China’s technology is breathing new life into the Olympic Games with innovation and warmth,” the article stated.
The Chinese Communist Party maintains a cordial relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), despite its involvement in ongoing human rights violations. Another state-run newspaper lauded IOC President Kirsty Coventry for his positive remarks about Xi Jinping, referring to him in endearing terms during various sports matches.
The IOC has disregarded appeals to relocate the 2022 Olympics out of respect for victims of genocide, even as they face protests from anti-genocide advocates.
Tursnay Ziavudun, a survivor from the concentration camp system in East Turkestan, expressed in February 2022 that broadcasters like NBC are, in essence, supporting the genocide of her people by covering the Olympics. “In my view, the Chinese government is committing genocide and crimes against humanity,” she stated. “By broadcasting these Olympics, you’re endorsing the Chinese government and, consequently, this genocide.”
