DHS Responds to CBS Report on Illegal Aliens
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has criticized a recent CBS News report that labeled many deported illegal immigrants as nonviolent. The report suggested that just 14% of the approximately 400,000 immigrants arrested during Trump’s first year faced serious violent charges.
In a post on the X platform, DHS called the report “absurd,” pointing out that many individuals considered nonviolent have troubling criminal backgrounds. According to their statement, serious crimes like child pornography distribution, drug trafficking, and gang affiliations—including notorious groups like MS-13—are often categorized as nonviolent by the media.
The agency highlighted a specific case involving Antonio Israel Lazo-Quintanilla, an individual wanted in El Salvador for severe crimes, including murder and extortion. Even though his U.S. offense was simply driving without a license, DHS clarified that his violent past and gang connections make him a significant threat.
They provided additional examples, underscoring that several individuals with history of multiple murders are registered as noncriminals in the U.S. For instance, Edward Hernandez, an MS-13 member, is known for committing brutal murders in his home country, yet he has not been convicted of any crimes here.
DHS reiterated its commitment to tackling these public safety risks, emphasizing that it would vigorously pursue individuals posing threats to American citizens.
Meanwhile, the CBS report indicated a decline in public support for Trump on immigration issues, citing a poll showing support drop from 59% to 46% during his second term.
