Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Two Boys in Oklahoma
Over the weekend, two young boys lost their lives after falling through the ice of a frozen stream in Oklahoma, leaving their families and the community heartbroken.
On Saturday evening, Talon Winery, 8, and Emmett Bennett, 9, ventured onto the ice of Bird Creek in Avant and unfortunately broke through into the cold waters. Authorities reported the incident shortly after 7:13 p.m. when they received a call about a child found in the stream.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where one boy was retrieved from the water and administered life-saving measures but unfortunately was declared dead shortly thereafter.
The second boy, Emmett, was discovered later on, after extensive search efforts that involved drones and specialized rescue boats.
While the police haven’t officially named the boys, family members revealed that Talon was rescued from the creek by his uncle and grandfather. They tried to perform CPR, but tragically, he was unresponsive.
“His grandfather and uncle pulled him out and began CPR, but our baby was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Our hearts are broken; it feels unreal,” read a message related to a funeral fundraiser for Talon.
A separate GoFundMe campaign noted that Emmett “drowned in a stream near his home,” emphasizing the devastation felt by his family. “Their world has been turned upside down,” his parents expressed, reflecting the unimaginable pain they are experiencing.
Emmett’s aunt, Angela Randolph, shared her frustrations about the search, recalling how they were initially kept from looking for him. “We thought he wasn’t supposed to be in the water. He was just scared because he saw his friend,” she said, capturing the confusion and hope they felt during that difficult time.
The sheriff’s office has since issued a warning to residents about the dangers of venturing onto frozen bodies of water, reminding everyone that they can be deceptively unstable. “Even when they appear solid, ice conditions can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous,” stated the sheriff’s office in a message expressing condolences to the families and the community.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
