Trump Administration Plans to Repeal Climate Regulations

This week, the Trump administration intends to roll back important climate regulations put in place during the Obama era, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The 2009 Endangerment Study provided the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to manage greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, under the Clean Air Act. Officials, who wished to remain unnamed, shared that a final ruling is anticipated soon, which will focus on dismantling vehicle emissions standards.

While the new rule doesn’t directly aim to alter emissions standards for power plants, it lays the groundwork for potential future changes, according to the Journal. Historically, Democrats have leveraged these Endangerment findings to enforce stringent climate policies, but repealing them could enhance consumer options and reduce costs, as energy policy experts have indicated previously.

Daniel Turner, founder and executive director of Power The Future, remarked, “President Trump was elected to prioritize families, and he’s keeping that promise by eliminating this detrimental regulation that raises prices and penalizes American consumers. This is a significant change for generations to come.” He further added that the overly cautious environmental policies of the past have threatened energy stability, and this rollback signals progress toward meeting America’s growing energy demand in the future.

On his first day back in office, President Trump directed the EPA to reconsider these Endangerment findings, which had been initially proposed for repeal last July.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has characterized the revocation of these findings as potentially “the largest deregulatory action in American history.”

David Blackmon, an oil and gas expert, noted that reversing the “infamous” discovery would be beneficial for consumers and help manage energy costs. He mentioned, “This finding pushed us away from dependable fossil fuels toward unreliable renewable options, increasing energy prices and putting average Americans at greater risk of power outages.” He stressed the importance of repealing it to liberate the economy and promote market-driven innovation without bureaucratic hindrances.

In addition, the Trump administration is expected to reveal other energy-related announcements this week. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is likely to issue an executive order to compel the Department of the Army to procure electricity from coal-fired power plants. Moreover, further funding for coal power plants across the country is anticipated.
