Tragic Murder Leads to Suspension of Minnesota Gubernatorial Campaign

Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud City Councilman and the Republican candidate for governor of Minnesota, suspended his campaign on Monday following the brutal murder of his 22-year-old daughter.

The Minnesota Republican Party expressed deep sorrow at the news, stating, “We are saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Jeff Johnson’s daughter, who was killed in a violent crime Saturday night in St. Cloud.” They added, “There are no words that can adequately express our sadness for Jeff and his family. The loss of a child is unimaginable, and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this devastating time.”

On Saturday evening, the St. Cloud City Police responded to reports of a medical emergency at the apartment of Harry Marie Tobler, Mr. Johnson’s daughter. Authorities discovered her deceased, having suffered multiple stab wounds. Her husband, Dylan Tobler, who is 23, was also found at the scene with life-threatening injuries, suspected to be self-inflicted. He was initially treated at St. Cloud Hospital and has since been stabilized, but will face murder-related charges according to police.

It’s worth noting that just last month, Dylan Tobler pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct connected to incidents involving his wife in June 2025.

By Tuesday, all traces of Johnson’s campaign appeared to be removed from his campaign page.

The former City Council member had previously launched his gubernatorial bid in March 2025, addressing issues like fraud, crime, and the flight of businesses from Minnesota. He accused current Governor Tim Walz of leading the state into a prolonged crisis.

The Minnesota Republican Party urged the public to “join us in lifting up the Johnson family during this incredibly difficult time.”
